Papakura will be the first area in the Auckland region to get the new-three bin rubbish collection service and the first large-scale area to get a weekly food waste service.

The three-bin service includes:

  • The recycling bin for household plastic containers, paper, cardboard, cans, tins and glass containers, which is already in use around the region.
  • A new food waste bin, for all household food scraps.
  • A new rubbish bin.

Timeframe

The food scraps collection service is planned to commence in March/April 2018 and the tagged rubbish bin service in June 2018.

These services will be rolled out across Auckland in the next three-to-five years.

Food waste collection

The average Auckland household rubbish bag/bin contains around 40% food waste.

Each household will receive a kitchen caddy to collect food scraps and a food waste bin to empty these scraps into. The food waste bin will be emptied from the kerbside as part of a weekly collection.

The collected food waste would be processed on a commercial scale for beneficial re-use including the production of compost for agriculture and farming. Energy which can be turned into electricity can also be created from this process.

This will significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill – saving residents money on rubbish disposal and benefiting the environment.

Pay-as-you-throw rubbish collection

Each household will be provided with a standard (120L) rubbish bin for their household rubbish. The rubbish bin collection will replace the orange pre-paid rubbish bag currently used.

Households will pay for the collection of their rubbish through a tag system which will be available through retail outlets where orange bags are currently sold. Residents can choose how often they want to have their bin emptied by attaching the tag to their bin.

Tag cost information will be available closer to the service launch in 2018.

The rubbish collection service will continue to run weekly.

Recycling collection

There will be no changes to the fortnightly recycling service.
