What is changing?

Auckland Council will be providing rubbish bins in May 2018 to all residential households in the legacy Papakura District Council area. You will have to buy an Auckland Council tag and attach it to your rubbish bin on collection day when you want the bin emptied.

 

What about small businesses, will we get a bin?

Every property (residential and commercial/business) that pays the waste management targeted rate is eligible to receive a 120L wheelie bin and a foodwaste bin. The bin is intended for the disposal of domestic quantities of rubbish and foodwaste only

 

Will the bins replace the orange bags?

Yes. The current proposal is that the orange bag collection service will stop on Friday 1 June 2018 and bins collections start on Monday 4 June.

 

Why are bins replacing orange bags?

Auckland Council is phasing out its bag collection services across the Auckland region and standardising its rubbish collection service to a bin only service in line with its Waste Management Minimisation Plans. Two key reasons are; firstly to encourage household waste minimisation and secondly to reduce the health and safety risk associated with bag collections.

 

How much will the bin cost me?

Nothing. The bin is free of charge. You will need to pay to have it emptied using the tags.

How many rubbish bins can I get?

One

 

What if I cannot fit all of my rubbish into the bin?

 It is estimated that 45% of all household rubbish is food waste. Auckland Council will also be providing all residential households in the legacy Papakura District Council area with a bin for your food waste (see below). This should allow you to fit all of your rubbish into the rubbish bin.

 

Will my rubbish collection day change?

No. Rubbish collection days will stay the same

 

Will my rubbish collection still be weekly?

Yes.

 

I have to pay for orange bags. Will I have to pay to have my bin emptied?

Yes. You will have to buy an Auckland Council tag and attach it to the rubbish bin, on your collection day, when you want it emptied.

Do I have to put my rubbish bin out every week?

 No. You only have to put your rubbish bin out when it is full. When you want it emptied attach a tag to the bin and put it out on your normal rubbish collection day

 

Will there be enough room on the footpath for my recycling bin, rubbish bin and food waste bin?

The room taken up by the rubbish bin should be about the same, if not less, than the room taken up by rubbish bags. The food waste bin is a quarter the size of the rubbish bin and should not be an issue.

‘Food waste’ refers to food scraps and waste, such as fruit or vegetable peelings, meal leftovers, bread, pasta and rice, dairy products, coffee grounds and tea bags. For a full list of what can be placed in your food waste bin please see the leaflet – ‘what can be put in your organics bin’

 

I still compost, what should I do?

 The food waste service is part of Auckland Council’s three tiered approach to managing food waste.

We strongly encourage those that can compost to continue doing so as it’s great for the environment and brings lots of benefits to the soil in your garden. Before wasting food please consider can it be frozen, reused or did it need to be purchased in the first place? New Zealanders waste over $500 per household each on food going to waste.

Further our current food waste trial suggests that people like to use the service alongside composting. 75% of composters in the organics trial also use the service – both things are complementary to each other. The food waste collection service will handle some items you may not normally place in the home compost such as bones and fish heads.

 

When will the food waste bin be delivered and when will the collections start?

The current proposal is to deliver food waste bins in March 2018 and collections will start in April.

 

What will be the size of the food waste bins?

Residents will be provided with a 23 litre kerbside bin and a 7 litre kitchen caddy for the kitchen.

 

What is the kitchen caddy for?

The kitchen caddy is for the collecting the food waste in the home before it is transferred to the kerbside bin

 

Can I get a larger or additional food waste bin?

On assessment, some households may be eligible for an additional bin as per Auckland Councils eligibility process.  

 

Will this food waste service cost me?

The projected cost of the food waste collection service is approximately $50 a year, which will be included as part of your targeted rate.

 

What happens to the foodwaste once it is collected?

Food waste is full of valuable nutrients, nitrogen and carbon. The collected material will be processed for compost for agriculture, fruit and vegetable growing and farming across the upper North Island. The process helps to close the nutrient cycle, making food production more sustainable and environmentally friendly as a result.

Compost will also be available for council partners and local group’s gardens to use on food growing projects and community gardens – bring wider social and environmental benefits to the region.

Yes, we can offer an assisted service. Please contact council on 09 301 0101.  One of our Waste Solutions team will be in contact to assess if you meet the eligibility criteria.

 

Do I need to use compostable liners in the bin?

No you not need use compostable liners; tissues, newspapers are good alternatives. Further, you don’t need to use anything if you don’t want to.

 

I know its for food waste but what about compostable plates, cutlery and coffee cups?

Compostable packaging including plants, cutlery and coffee cups will not be allowed.
